Eleni Tsigarida, founder of ETSI Architects, recently presented at the Hotel Experience event, discussing the inspiring “Revival of Vamvakou” project. This project is a remarkable case study that demonstrates how rural revival in Greece can breathe new life into a nearly abandoned village. The story began in 2017 when five young people with roots in Vamvakou decided to seek support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to rejuvenate their ancestral home.
With a sustainable development model that emphasizes preserving architectural heritage and promoting community engagement, Vamvakou has seen incredible progress. From revitalizing the local school and creating a modern co-working space to establishing an incubator supporting innovative business ideas, this village has transformed into a beacon of rural renewal.
Eleni highlighted ETSI Architects’ role in this transformation, including restoring traditional buildings and supporting the growth of local culture. The Vamvakou project is an inspiring example of how combining heritage conservation with community-centered development can foster a vibrant, sustainable future for rural areas.
